An ABS Sensor is an electronic monitoring device for the braking system. The Sensors are connected to each of the vehicles wheels. They pick up variation in rotational speed, measure and compare that speed and transfers the information to the ABS controller when indicated. If a wheel is spinning too fast/slow or is at risk of locking, the sensor will pick this up and signal the ABS controller which will activate and adjust the wheel speed. When the vehicle is in motion and a fault occurs a diagnostic can be run through the ABS system and the fault indicated by displaying a code. This code will be unique and inform whoever carries out the test where and what the fault is.

Sensors will need replacing over time, as they will pick up dust which on heating will cake into a carbon like substance, coating the Sensor and disabling it. This will cause problems as readings made by the Sensor will be misinterpreted by the ABS computer and hinder monitoring of the wheel's rotational speeds. This will eventually trigger a fault light indicator. The Sensor may just need to be cleaned at this point but if the fault continues to be triggered it will need replacing.
