What is an Immobiliser?
The immobiliser on a vehicle stops thieves from starting it by disconnecting power to the engine. The only way power can be transmitted to allow the vehicle to start is if you enter the right key into the ignition. There is normally a chip in the key that when it enters a short radius distance from the immobiliser it will activate the process. This distance is normally about 30cm.
Here's a good tip: When you want to create a copy key the main dealers will charge you anything up to £350 to include the chip and programme it to your vehicle. However, if you disconnect the chip in the key and tape it under the
dashboard, then you can pop to your local locksmith and get a copy key for a fraction of the price. As long as the chip is near the immobiliser the car should start everytime. Of course, the downside is that it may make your car less secure. Do also remember when fitting a new immobiliser to get it programmed to the vehicle ECU.
