What is a Towbar with Electrics?
A tow bar is the 'L' shaped device that fixes to the rear of your vehicle enabling you to tow items such as caravans, trailers etc. When you have a tow bar fitted you will normally be asked if you require a single point, or twin point electric. These means either one plug, or two plugs to be fitted. Twin point electrics are only really needed if you are pulling a caravan. You will need to power by law the rear lights of the item you are towing (single point). These are lights to display to vehicles behind your movements, such as when indicating, braking etc. The other electric (twin point) is for power relating to the inside of the item (caravan) you are towing such as fridges, interior lights etc. Since 2011, if you have electrics fitted to the back of your vehicle, it is now an MOT requirement that they must work to pass.
