Renault 5 Overview
The Renault 5 is classed as a supermini and was produced by the French automobile manufacturers Renault. This car was in production from 1972-96. The Renault 5 was available over two generations and was a very popular car of this type. These cars are good fun to drive and cheap to buy. They are good on fuel and are pretty reliable and are surprisingly spacious for a car of this size. There are not many of these cars around today but if you find one then be sure to check it over thoroughly. If you still own one then let us know how it is running.
Renault 5 History
The first generation (1972-85) was also known as the R5 and had a very distinctive design, with the steeply sloping rear end and dashboard. This car was a front wheel drive car which took a lot of its mechanical design from the Renault 4. This car was very spacious compared with a lot of other European superminis.
The second generation (1985-96) gave the Renault 5 a much more modern look while maintaining the now familiar look associated with this car. It shared the design platform with the Renault 9 and 11, making it slightly larger and wider than its predecessor. In 1990 the Renault 5 was replaced with the Renault Clio but production still ran until 1996 for some models.
The Renault 5 was available in 1.0, 1.1, 1.4 and 1.7L petrol engines and a 1.6L diesel engine. The 1.6L diesel engine was the most economical of the available engines, while the smaller petrol variants were still really good economically. Which engine did you have and how did it perform economically? Remember to consider the age, fuel type and engine size when determining fuel economy.
