The 3 Series is a very popular BMW car, and the E36 is one of the most well received in the series. During its time in production the BMW 316i was named in USA''s Car and Driver Magazine''s ''10 Best Cars'' every year. It was also named Car and Driver''s best handling car over $30k in 1997.

The BMW E36 was in production between the years of 1990 and 2000. Over its decade of production the E36 was built in BMW''s factories in Germany, Mexico, Egypt and the United States. Being a part of the 3 Series, the 316i was destined to be a popular vehicle. It was received well in the European market, experiencing enormous success. The E36 laid strong foundations for the popularity that its successor the E46 later experienced. The 316i model ceased production in 1999.

The BMW E36 was introduced in 1990 as a replacement for the second generation 3 Series, the E30. It was made available as a coupe, convertible, saloon, estate and hatchback. A number of petrol and diesel engines were available, ranging between 1.6 litres and 3.2 litres. Buyers had a choice of four-, five- and six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. BMW used Z-axle multilink rear suspension on the four door saloon version they initially released.

The 316i model was available with a SOHC 8V four cylinder petrol engine. There were three versions made available. The first was a 1.6 litre that offered 100 PS, the second was a 1.6 litre coupe that offered 102 PS. The third, which was introduced in 1994, was a 1.8 litre that offered 115 PS.
