Citroen C4 Common Problems and Solutions
Heavy Steering
Problem:
The steering has started to feel heavy, but there are no warning lights on. You may also notice a groaning-type sound from the steering column.
Solution:
This will be the result of a faulty alternator, which is not holding its charge. You can find a replacement easily on our parts list for the C4, and it's a very easy job to install the replacement.

Engine Knocking
Problem:
When pulling away, you can hear a knocking sound coming from the engine.
Solution:
This will be either a failed gearbox or a faulty engine mount. Both are available from us and can be delivered. Replacing the gearbox yourself can be tricky but will be a lot cheaper than a garage. However, check the engine mount first. It may be a simple case of tightening some bolts, but if the problem has been ongoing, then you may need to replace the entire mounting.

Scratched Windows
Problem:
The rubber on the wipers has flexed, and the wiper is scratching the windscreen.
Solution:
Poorly designed windscreen wiper blades are the issue, particularly on early models of the C4. Your first step is to order replacement wiper blades that won't flex, which you'll be able to find easily in our store. Then, assess the damage to the windscreen, and order a replacement if the scratches are limiting your view.

No Tension on Seat Belts
Problem:
The seat belts don't lock into place when moving forward quickly and hang loose when they are not in use.
Solution:
If your C4 is still under warranty, then a Citroen dealer will usually replace the entire seat belt system for free. If you're not still under warranty, then you may be able to resolve the problem by ordering seat belt pre-tensioners from our parts list and replacing them as necessary. The problem is that this might not always work, and you'll end up needing to order a complete seat belt system for each affected seat.

Creaky Front Doors
Problem:
There is a creaking sound when you open or close the front doors.
Solution:
Sedans with larger doors are usually more vulnerable to this, but it can affect all C4s. The problem is down to the design of the doors, and you'll need to remove the door panels and pad them out with foam.

Leaks into front footwells
Problem:
If you have damp carpets or have noticed a leak coming into the front footwells, this is usually caused by the air conditioning pipe leaking. This pipe should drain onto the floor outside the car instead of inside the cabin.
Solution:
You will need to have the air conditioning pipe repaired.

Problem:
If you are finding that the air conditioning is struggling to maintain a high or low temperature, then it usually due to a faulty sensor.
Solution:
Fitting a replacement sensor will resolve this issue.

Cruise control warning light
Problem:
If the cruise control warning light is on the dashboard saying 'Speed Control System Faulty', then this is a common issue on the C4. This is a particular problem with early models.
Solution:
Having a software update usually rectifies the issue.

Window wiper problems
Problem:
The C4 is known for having problems with both the front and rear window wipers. Is the video below anything like your problem?
Solution:

Boot problems
Problem:
It is known for the C4 to have problems with the boot not opening or closing properly. This is caused by a faulty micro switch.
Solution:
Fitting a replacement micro switch will sort the problem.

Brake Failing
Problem:
The brakes are not as effective as they used to be.
Solution:
This is very common to see on C4s built between 2013 and 2017 and is being caused by material detaching from the timing belt that is affecting the brake vacuum pump. You will need to order both a replacement vacuum pump and a new timing belt, which we have in stock at all times.
