Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Common Problems and Solutions
Suspension knocking noise
Problem:
When you are turning round corners, are you hearing a knocking noise coming from the suspension? If so, then this is an indication of a problem with the front suspension struts.
Solution:
Thankfully this is not a major problem and only an indication that the struts need lubricating. This should sort the problem.

Whining noise
Problem:
You may hear a whining noise coming from the gearbox. This noise will get louder as you increase the speed and will be at its loudest at speeds over 40mph. This is a common symptom of the gearbox output shaft bearings failing.
Solution:
You will need to fit replacement output shaft bearings to stop the noise.

Bad smell from climate control
Problem:
When you turn the climate control on are you getting a fishy smell? If so, the evaporator drain hole will be blocked. This is a common occurrence on these vehicles.
Solution:
You will need to unblock the evaporator drain hole to stop the bad smell.

Engine idling problems
Problem:
The idle control valve can fail on this car. The car should idle at around 1000rpm or lower. If it jumps higher when either the fan or air conditioning are turned on, you have a faulty idle control valve.
Solution:
The first thing to try is removing the idle control valve and cleaning it. If this does not work it will need replaced in order to fix the problem. Watch the video below to see how to clean the valve:

Sudden jolts
Problem:
The actuator is known to fail on the Lancer Evolution. If you are finding that the car is having sudden jolts or boosts after a slight power loss at high revs, the actuator is the cause of your problem.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement actuator to resolve the issue.
