Head gasket failure
Problem:
The second generation 4Runner is known for having problems with the cylinder head gasket blowing. This problem was a recall issue which meant that Toyota should have fixed it free of charge. Even with this in mind, they still do not last as long as would be expected.

Fitting a replacement cylinder head gasket will fix the problem.

Rough idling
Problem:
The Toyota 4Runner is prone to rough idling issues due to a problem with the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) sensor. The engine should idle at a constant speed, but if this is the problem it will a have an irregular idle. The rpm needle will be moving up being caused by the engine revving up and down.
Solution:
If you remove the MAF sensor and clean it with good quality carb cleaner, this should fix your problem. You can watch the video below to see how this is done.
