Toyota Land Cruiser Common Problems and Solutions
Rough Idle and Poor Performance (All Models Using AdBlue)
Problem:
The car is idling roughly and there is a noticeable drop in driving performance. The exhaust warning light is illuminated.
Solution:
Models of the Land Cruiser that use AdBlue commonly find that the EGR valve is preventing the N0x treatment system from working to the necessary standards. You'll need to order a new EGR from our parts list and replace the faulty design.

Shock absorber failure
Problem:
If you are experiencing issues with the suspension, the shock absorbers are known to fail.

Automatic gearbox problems
Problem:
The Landcruiser has known issues with the automatic gearbox. If you are finding that it is struggling when changing gears, you have an issue with the selectors. This can be a major issue when changing the gears manually.
Solution:
You are best having a professional look at this, as these gearboxes are quite complex. You may have to have some selectors replaced.

Air conditioning problems
Problem:
If you are finding that the air conditioning is not working on all settings, it is usually caused by a fractured pipe.
Solution:
You will need to correctly identify exactly which pipe is fractured and fit a replacement pipe to sort the problem.

Bonnet strap failure
Problem:
The bonnet straps have been known to fail on the Landcruiser. If you have found that the bonnet straps are not holding the weight of the bonnet when you have it open, you will need to replace the straps.
Solution:
As mentioned above, you will need to replace the bonnet straps to resolve the issue.

Increased Stopping Distances
Problem:
You are losing brake power, and the car is taking a lot longer to come to a complete stop.
Solution:
The brake vacuum pump has rotor blades that often have a rough surface, increasing wear and tear. In some cases, they will become so worn that they break, and that means absolutely no braking power. You're going to need to replace the vacuum pump blades and the rotor.

Lots of Play On Steering Wheel
Problem:
Directional control is getting visibly worse, and there is growing play on the steering wheel.
Solution:
Normally only a problem if the steering wheel is subject to a heavy impact, Toyota recalled some older Land Cruiser models due to a component fault. The fixing component on the steering shaft can disengage, and over time will lead to a complete loss of steering control. Toyota has issued a redesigned fixing component that we always have in stock and can deliver when you order from our store.

Musty Smell From HVAC
Problem:
There is a musty smell coming from the HVAC unit.
Solution:
Although Toyota recognises that this is a common problem, they don't have any real solutions to it. The problem is blocked evaporator housing drain pipes. This is leading to condensation and then the inevitable mould. You will have to remove the entire HVAC system, including those drain pipes. Clean everything thoroughly, and the smell should go away.
Difficulty level
Beeping When Pressing Brake
Problem:
The car makes a continuous electronic beeping sound whenever you touch the brake pedal.
Solution:
Very easy to overlook in the owner's manual, this is a warning that your brake fluid is too low. Top up your brake fluid, and the beeping sound will stop. Remember to check and top up your brake fluid regularly.

Engine Stalling
Problem:
The car keeps stalling, and there are spots of fuel on the road.
Solution:
Some models built-in 2019 had fuel pipes that weren't tightened on enough. If your car is still under warranty, then you can get a replacement fuel inlet pipe and clamp for free, and Toyota will do the work for you for free too. If your Land Cruiser isn't under warranty, then you can order the parts from us, and they are fairly easy to install.
