The Toyota RAV4 is a popular sport utility vehicle (SUV) produced by Japanese car manufacturer Toyota since its launch in 1994. The Toyota RAV4 4x4 has been a popular compact SUV for the Japanese manufacturer. According to IHS Automotive, 90% of RAV4s sold in the past 10 years are still on the road, showing that the vehicles have been a solid choice for buyers throughout its four generations.

 

First Generation Toyota RAV4 (1994 - 2000)

1994 saw the launch of the first generation Toyota RAV4, which became known as the XA10 series. This model was built on a similar platform to the Carina and Corolla vehicles, and shared some elements. Both two- and four-door options were offered initially.

In 1997 the RAV4 was named Automobile of the Year by Automobile Magazine. The following year, in 1998, the RAV4 underwent a slight restyle facelift on the exterior, including updating the front and rear fascias, with the addition of a soft-top two-door made available.

Second Generation Toyota RAV4 (2000 - 2005)

The second gen RAV4, known as the XA20, went on sale during 2000. The same door configurations were offered as its predecessor, and the Mk2 was once again constructed on a platform with similar elements to the Carina and Corolla. Engines ranged from a 1.8 litre petrol to a 2.4 litre diesel option.

A number of trim levels were available in the UK, including NV, NRG, GX and VX, all of which had different features and levels of equipment. Some additional features seen from this generation were anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver''s seat, power windows, mirrors and updated seats. A new sport package was also offered, which included a mesh grille, bonnet scoop, colour-coded door handles, silver sport pedals, heated mirrors and sport fabric seats.

Third Generation Toyota RAV4 (2005 - 2012)

The 2006 model year saw a totally redesigned version of the RAV4 vehicle, which was initially unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. This Mk3 variant used an all new platform, and featured new Electric Power Steering (EPS) systems. The vehicles were built at Toyota''s assembly plant in Tahara, Aichi, as well as plants in Canada and China.

In 2008 the RAV4 was given another mid-cycle facelift for certain markets, including an all-new four-cylinder engine and a redesigned front and rear end.

Fourth Generation Toyota RAV4 (2013 - Present)

At the Los Angeles Auto Show 2012 Toyota unveiled the latest gen RAV4, which went on sale in the UK in the following year. Engines choices include a 2.0 and 2.5 litre four-cylinder petrol, as well as two turbodiesels - 2.0 and 2.2 litres. Transmission options include a six-speed manual, CVT automatic, and six-speed automatic.

With this model many were pleased with the spacious feel inside the cabin, although it is felt that the engine range is lacking. A lack of refinement and overall quality, as well as high running costs compared to its competitors, are some other areas where the Toyota fell short with this newer model.
