The Saab 900,, an automobile from Saab, was based on the Saab 99,, chassis, but had a longer front. The drag coefficient was 0.34. It was produced in 2- and 4-door sedan, and 3- and 5-door coupe configurations; additionally, a cabriolet (convertible) model was produced. There were single- and twin carburetor, fuel-injection and turbocharged engines, including both full pressure and in European models, low pressure turbos. The Saab 900 was a front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact car with a longitudinally-mounted, 45-degree slanted, inline 4-cylinder engine, double wishbone front suspension and beam-axle rear suspension. In its heyday, the 900 was popular with drivers who enjoyed its comfort, safety, practicality (especially hatchbacks), and highway driving manners.
The Saab 9000,, the Type Four chassis, was shared with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and the Alfa Romeo 164. The Fiat and Lancia looked much like the Saab, but the Alfa Romeo only shared the chassis. Because they were very similar, many parts can be exchanged between the four cars regardless of brand. For example, the doors from the Fiat Croma fit directly on the 9000, but are lighter, due to less side impact protection. The windshield from the Croma can also be used on the 9000. The original 9000 was a 5-door hatchback. A 4-door sedan version was later added and, the hatchback appearance was modified and modernised, in the Saab CS version. Because its platform was shared closely with three other cars, the Saab 9000's ignition key was situated on the steering column (like the Saab 95, / 96/ 97), instead of the Saab 99, / 900 location, between the front seats. The later 9-5 returned the ignition back between the front seats. For the first year, the only engine available was a watercooled DOHC 16-valve 4-cylinder engine with a turbocharger, at 1985 cc, giving 175 hp (129 kW). It was equipped with a computer display (the EDU, electronic display unit), showing actual and approximate fuel consumption, distance to an empty fuel tank, alternator output voltage, lowest battery voltage during engine start and the outside temperature. If the outside temperature fell to a range of 26° to 38 °F, the temp display is automatically selected to warn of possible 'black ice' road conditions. Later models added more trip computer functions to a separate display combined with the clock, including setting trip distances, arrival times, average speed, and excess speed alarms. A separate pictogram monitored oil pressure, showed open doors/hatch, and all exterior light bulbs in case of failures.

Saab Sport, as a replacement for the Saab GT750. It used the same body shell as the Saab 96, with slight modifications and with a different interior configuration and equipment. From the outside it could be differentiated from a standard 96 by the twin chrome stripes along the lower part of the sides. The engine was an 841 cc two-stroke three cylinder engine with one Solex carburetor per cylinder, giving 52 hp. The engine was lubricated via a separate tank for two-stroke oil, allowing the use of ordinary petrol. The gearbox had four gears. In order to overcome the problems of overrun for the two-stroke engine, a freewheel device was fitted. The car also used disc brakes at the front, something that was unusual at the time and the wheels had four studs instead of the five used on the 96 and were of a stronger build, to withstand the extra workload.
