Alfa Romeo History

ALFA romeo historyThe firm “Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili”, A.L.F.A was founded in 1910 under the direction of Cavalier Ugo Stella. Alfa produced a series of models that became competitive on the market and stood out for performance and drivability.

Nicola Romeo left the Alfa Romeo Company in 1928; this coincided with the arrival of the 6-cylinder car, which was light, fast and sparkling. Driving became a powerful passion and a true “status symbol”. Mass production began in 1929 and saw the creation of the Scuederia Ferrari, concentrating entirely on competitions.

Mass production was introduced and all the plants were modernized and by the second half of the thirties the company was thriving.

The 50s showed Alfa Romeo’s twin objectives to establish assembly line production and to capitalize on sporting success by providing a high performance product. The 159’s won the World Championship in 1950 and 1951. These years started the trend that was continued on into the future: collaboration between interior study centers and external bodywork stylists. In 1958 Alfa Romeo comes into an agreement with Renault to make the “Dauphine” saloon.

The 1970’s were periods of ups and downs for Alfa Romeo. Difficulties with management alternate with sporting success. Alfa Romeo were facing financial difficulties and could not meet with market demand. Sporting results on the other hand were highly satisfactory.

This decade sees the rebirth of the company. The Pomigliano d'Arco plant produces the 155, which is followed by the 145 and the 146, while Arese witnesses the creation of the thrilling new Spider and GTV. 1997 is the year of the 156, which in 1998 is voted "Car of the Year". 1998 sees the launch of the new flagship, the 166. This takes us to 2000, to the threshold of the third millennium, and the 147, which wins the prestigious title of “Car of the Year 2001”.
