Citroen History

In 1906 André Citroën is appointed managing director of Automobiles Mors, a company that made its name by beating a number of speed records at the turn of the century. André Citroën reorganizes the workshops and becomes involved in the design of the new models. In ten years, he doubles Mors's annual production.

In 1912, the Engrenages Citroën-Hinstin partnership changes its name to Société Anonyme des Engrenages Citroën, a limited company, and moves to 31 Quai de Grenelle in Paris. At the same time, André Citroën becomes Chairman of the Automobile Employers' Federation.

In 1920 Citroën wins the grand prix for fuel economy at Le Mans, and its fame spreads rapidly. Production is ramped up as a result. By the end of 1920 15,000 Citroens are on the road and annual production was 12,244 vehicles. Ten years later Citroen are producing 77,788 vehicles per year. The company had grown radically.

In 1940 during the 2nd World War Citroen production falls as the Quai de Javel plant I bombed and the Belgium plant partially destroyed and annual vehicle productions falls to 32, 384 vehicles. By 1945 total Citroen production is 13.4% of pre-war levels and is producing under 10,000 cars annually.

After the end of the Second World War production was on the increase. And by the end of the 1970s production was over 650,000 annually. 1999 saw the year that Citroen started to produce over 1 millions cars annually. Now Citroën is certified ISO 9001 compliant for the third year running.
