History Of Mitsubishi
The history of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation dates back to 1870, the year that the Tsukumo Shokai shipping company was founded. Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries, which can trace its origins to Tsukumo Shokai, launched the "Mitsubishi Model-A" project in 1917, one of the pioneers of Japanese mass-production passenger cars. Mitsubishi Motors became an independent company in 1970 when the automobile division was spun off from Mitsubishi Heavy-Industries, producing cars, trucks and buses for over thirty years. In 2003 the company was reborn again as the new Mitsubishi Motors; a manufacturer specialized in passenger cars.
Just 10 years after Mitsubishi motors became an independent company they established Mitsubishi in America. In the next few years Mitsubishi release a number of models including the “Pajero”, “Tredia”, “Cordia” and “Starion”. Also in 1982 Mitsubishi Motors Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation acquire a 10% stake in Hyundai Motors and later a contract of joint development with the company is signed and a 100% stake in Tamachi Inc which later becomes MMSC.
In the UK the introduction of the European-built Carisma and Space Star models, together with the relaxation of import quotas on Japanese-built vehicles saw sales increase dramatically, to over 23,000 vehicles per annum in 1997. Mitsubishi became the fastest growing Japanese marque.
On 18th October 2000 MMC and DaimlerChrysler formally signed the terms of an alliance which puts them in the top three of the world's automotive giants. Whilst both will continue as separate entities it enables MMC to become stronger outside Asia, whilst DaimlerChrysler will gain a better foothold in the Asian markets. Design, development and production cooperation means that small cars produced at NedCar under both Mitsubishi and Mercedes names will share a common platform and GDI technology. The future looks exciting indeed.
