Mercedes Benz History

Mercedes historyThe Future of the Automobile has already started in 1886 when Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz independently of each other - opened up a new dimension of mobility for mankind – the motor vehicle. Their invention changed the world.

The first Mercedes hit the road on December the 22nd 1900, this first Mercedes was developed by Wilhelm Maybach, the chief engineer at DMG. The car had a lower centre of gravity, a pressed still frame and also a light high performance engine and honeycomb radiator. The model featured many innovations and is regarded today as the first modern automobile.

Mercedes – a Spanish girls’ name meaning ‘grace’ – was the name of the daughter born in 1889 to the Austrian businessman, Emil Jellinek, who had homes in Baden near Vienna and Nice. A progressive thinker with an interest in sport, Jellinek turned his enthusiasm to the dawning age of the automobile; an invention he knew would be of key importance for the future. As early as 1897, he made the journey to Cannstatt to visit the Daimler factory and ordered his first Daimler car - a 6 hp belt-driven vehicle with two-cylinder engine.

Mercedes vehicles were found to be unbeatable in virtually every aspect. When the 12/16 hp and 8/11 hp sister models were developed and released the Mercedes Dalmier plant in Cannstatt was to its full production capacity.

‘Mercedes’ name was legally registered on September 26 1902. And Emil Jellinek (one of the founders) obtained permission to call himself Jellinek-Mercedes. The brand name was successful but lacked a characteristic trademark, and then Paul and Adolf Daimler (the company’s founders 2 sons) and now the people in charge of the business remembered that their father once used a star for the business.

The DMG board immediately accepted the idea and Mercedes legally protected the use of the three pointed and four pointed star.
