History VW

“Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagens mbH” company was founded in May 1937. In early 1938, work began to construct the Volkswagenwerk plant which is to house production of the new vehicle designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

During the Second World War manufacturing is switched to armaments. After the end of the war in mid June 1945, the British Military Government takes over responsibility for Volkswagenwerk, and starts the mass production of the Volkswagen Beetle started.

1950 created a raising demand for Volkswagen vehicles, as the Volkswagen bus still known to some as the “VW Bully” went on sale and increased the company’s product range.

In 1955 Volkswagen produced their one millionth Volkswagen beetle.

Volkswagen broke the World car production record in February 1972. The beetle suppressed the legendary mark that Ford had made with the Model T also known as the “Tin Lizzy”, between 1908 and 1927.

The first Volkswagen Golf was built in January 1974. The saloon quickly became a hit, and became the legitimate heir to the beetle. The same year also sees the launch of the sporty Scirocco, which continued production until 1981.

Volkswagen again makes automotive history in 1999, with the launch of the Lupo 3L TDI, the first production car to offer fuel consumption of jus three litres per 100 kilometers.

In 2003 production of the fifth-generation Golf is started, embodying a new dynamism in its design and engineering.
