A distributor literally distributes or gives out a high voltage charge from a coil to a cylinder. This is done by a rotor in the distributor. The rotor is connected to the coil and the rotor spins inside the distributor. As the rotor spins it goes past contacts and as it passes a contact a high voltage pulse goes out from the coil to the cylinder. The charge goes across the gap between the contact and the rotor and then goes down the spark plug to the correct cylinder. As this part of the engine is in constant use the distributor should be checked regularly to ensure that this vital part functions fully. If the distributor does not work properly and the ignition system fires incorrectly emissions can increase and fuel consumption go up.
