There is also a carbon insert and all the high voltage coming through a coil to the spark plug goes through this insert. Dirt or wear can stop the engine firing properly. The distributor cap also has tower inserts that are made from aluminium or brass and oxidation can occur. Any green colouration caused by oxidation must be dealt with as this can cause damage to the distributor cap. If the damage is mild it can be cleaned. Cracks to the cap will mean that this part will have to be replaced.
