An Engine Control Unit or ECU as it is commonly known is part of the system controlling the engine and the transmission. A simple ECU controls the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders. Other ECU's also control the ignition timing through the use of sensors.
Any engine with fuel injection has an ECU that will make sure that the correct amount of fuel is injected into the engine. The ECU will inject more fuel when the throttle pedal is pressed and more air is passed into the engine. As the engine is warming up more fuel will be injected.
An ECU will also determine and adjust the timing of the spark to the engine to provide more fuel economy and better engine running.
Another ECU will control the time at which the valves in the engine open or close. This is most common in variable valve timing engines. The valves will open earlier at lower speeds determined by the ECU.
