An ignition amplifier device within the secondary circuit of an ignition system has an electrode spacing of between 0.05 and 0.2 mm with a condenser. This connection is then shunted to the electrodes of the spark plug.
It is important to the operation of the ignition system to ensure that the ignition amplifier is adequately earthed as it is often overlooked as an area for potential problems. The earth connection needs to be in good condition as it can cause a reduction in the primary current that will effect the current limiting (or dwell control) circuit. An earth return circuit can only be tested while the circuit is under load and so is inaccurate.
