What is a Camshaft?
The main function of a camshaft is to operate the piston valves, which are responsible for controlling the flow of air intake and exhaust gases. The camshaft consists of a shaft with several cams (oblong in shape) which when the shaft is rotated, press down upon the piston valves. The cams are situated at intervals along the shaft, with one cam for each piston valve. The cams are all set in different positions so that the valves are opened at different times, operating at the required time. The camshaft works in sync with the crankshaft, usually connected by a timing belt.
