In any car you will find a crankshaft and at one end is the Flywheel. In order for you car to work, the engine needs to turn over but the wheels don't always need move. When you stop the car the wheels stop turning but the engine continues to run and this is all down to the clutch and the Flywheel.

When your foot is off the accelerator the clutch springs push a plate against the clutch disc which then pushes the fly wheel. The flywheel locks the engine to the transmission and makes them both run at the same speed. When you then press the accelerator the clutch and flywheel are disengaged.

If the flywheel is damaged or not working properly you will have a situation where the engine may free-rev. You may have a grinding noise when you start the car but most importantly the clutch will not work properly and if left may damage the clutch system itself.
