A Glowplug is used in a diesel engine. It is a heating element that is manufactured out of platinum or iridium, metals that can maintain their integrity at high levels of heat.
The Glowplug heats the cylinders in the engine before starting. If the engine is started when the Glowplugs are working they may become damaged with the combination of engine heat and the element's heat. In modern cars the engine will not start until the glowplug relay has switched the Glowplug off. In older cars it is imperative that the driver waits until the wait to start indicator has gone off.
It has been suggested that Glowplugs are changed in the autumn as faulty Glowplugs can cause the engine to delay in starting or cause the engine not to start at all.
