The Idle valve is electrically-operated and allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate engine idle speed.
The engine generates enough power at idle speed, to run smoothly and operate its ancillaries (alternator, water pump, and, if equipped, other accessories such as power steering), but usually not enough to perform useful work, such as moving an automobile. Passenger-car engines idle speed is usually between 600 rpm and 1,000 rpm.
When the engine is operating a large number of accessories, such as air conditioning, the idle speed adjusts to ensure that the engine generates enough power to run smoothly and operate the accessories. This automatic adjustment feature can be found in most air conditioning-equipped engines in the carburetor or fuel injection system to raise the idle when the air conditioning is running.
