What is an Oil sump?
An oil sump is where the engine oil is held in the vehicle ready for the oil pump to transport around the engine to the appropriate moving parts for lubrication. The oil sump is a large container situated underneath the engine where the engine oil gathers after flowing through the engine lubricating the moving parts of the engine. Once gathered there the oil pump sucks up the oil, passes it through an oil filter ready to be transported to the appropriate parts for lubrication and heat control.
Variations of Oil sumps
There are two different types of oil sump: wet sump and dry sump. The wet sump is the most common oil sump, which is situated underneath the engine. Due to the positioning of the wet oil sump, the engine block needs to be situated higher up in the vehicle to make allowance for the oil sump. The dry sump is more suited for motor racing vehicles as this type of sump allows for lower positioned engine and more efficiency, aerodynamics and power for the vehicle.
