As a versatile MPV in the Ford lineup the C-Max has been a successful venture, praised for its handling and low running costs as well as boasting tons of interior space - both for passengers and cargo. It also ranked very well when it comes to safety, achieving a five-star rating during Euro NCAP testing in 2010.

First generation Ford C-Max (2003 - 2010)

Ford launched the C-Max Mk1 in 2003, as the first vehicle to use its new Ford C1 platform, which was then also used by the Ford Focus MkII. Its internal configuration allows it to seat five passengers whilst still allowing for a generous amount of cargo space, something that made it popular with buyers. The option to fold the rear seats flat to create even more cargo space was also praised. Mechanically there were many similarities with the Focus. These include the control blade independent rear suspension, as well as the four-cylinder engine line up which ranged from a 1.6 litre Duratec to a 2.0 litre Duratorq diesel.

December 2006 saw Ford unveil a facelifted version of the C-Max at the Bologna Motor Show, which then went on sale during 2007. Before the facelift the C-Max was often known as the Ford Focus C-Max, but post-facelift models were simply known by the C-Max branding. This followed Ford''s strategy of creating a line of ''Max'' MPVs, starting with the launch of the S-Max in 2006.

As well as bringing a name change the facelift also changed the design to suit Ford''s new ''Kinetic Design'' style. This was shown by twin trapezoidal grilles, angular headlights and larger wheel arches. Ford states that only elements of the Kinetic Design language were used however, as the bodyshell was not designed with that look in mind.

Second generation Ford C-Max (2010 - present)

The second gen C-Max launched in 2010 and was built on Ford''s new Global C platform, which it shared with the Ford Focus MkIII. The new exterior appearance is influenced by the Iosis Max concept first showcased at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. With this generation Ford also introduced a LWB seven-seat variant of the C-Max, which they called the Ford Grand C-Max.

The new Mk III design platform allows Ford to use Torque Vectoring Control (TVC), a first in its class. As the previous generation the new C-Max also comes with a range of petrol and diesel four-cylinder engines which it shares with the Ford Focus. The redesigned vehicle now features flat-folding third row seats, a rearview camera with park assist functions and a panoramic sunroof. Other optional extras including dual-zone climate control system, sync, navigation systems and HD Radio, although some of these come as standard on certain trim levels.
