The Ford Escort Van is a reliable and roomy van based on the Ford Escort car. It was in production up until 2002 when it was discontinued by Ford for being too dated. Since then it has been popular in the used van market.
Ford Escort Van (1968 - 1990)
The Ford Escort Van was available to buy from April 1968, based on the MkI Escort. When the second generation Escort was introduced in 1974, the van version kept the panel work from the Mark I but had the front end and interior from the new model. Remaining stocks of the MkII Ford Escort Van delayed the launch of the third generation, which wasn''t available until the year following the introduction of the MkII car.
This third generation Escort Van featured unusual small side windows behind the front doors. These helped to improve visibility for the driver. A van version of the Ford Escort continued to be produced with each subsequent generation of the car.
Ford Escort Van (1991 - 1995)
This car derivative van is cheap and easy to maintain but it''s got no frills. The basic interior featured a plastic dash and cloth seats. Aside from the radio/cassette player there were few creature comforts. Although a low-spec workhorse with noisy engines, the Escort Van was Ford''s best-selling van for years. It was a reliable van and if anything did go wrong, or need replacing, Ford parts are generally reasonably priced and plentiful.
The loadspace, 2.5 cubic meters, compares well to similar commercial vehicles and it was a popular choice for many. The Escort Van had a load length of 1,823mm, a load width of 1,625mm, and a load height of 1,076mm. The absence of side loading doors didn''t hamper the practicality of the van as it was easy to slide cargo into the load space using the rear doors. The Escort Van was available with a choice of two payloads: 550kg and 715kg.
From 1991, the Ford Escort Van was available with 1.3 and 1.4-litre petrol engines and two 1.8-litre diesels, one of which was turbocharged.
Ford Escort Van (1996 - 2002)
According to the Parker''s review, the 1996 update to the Escort van offered "marked improvements". The ride and handling were improved by making small changes to the suspension, gearbox and steering. The new van also had reduced engine noise and a more rounded body.
The 1.4-litre petrol engine was dropped from the lineup leaving just the 1.3-litre and the two diesels. The other petrol engine was dropped in 1998, leaving just the choice of a non-turbo or turbo diesel.
The Escort Van was discontinued in 2002 when it was replaced by the new Transit Connect.
