Since its introduction it has evolved through three generations, with the newest generation achieving great popularity among car owners. The Galaxy was described by Autocar as having defined the large MPV class, "bridging the gap between commercial and domestic use better than any other seven-seat MPV". The newer Ford S-Max vehicle is also inspired by the Ford Galaxy.

The Ford Galaxy is known for its spacious interior and excellent cockpit ergonomics. The Galaxy rates well when it comes to reviews, with many praising its dynamic appeal over other large MPVs on the market. With three generations produced, Ford has worked hard to ensure that the Galaxy adapts to the changing times and gets better and better with each reincarnation.

First generation Ford Galaxy (1995 - 1999)

Initially designed as a joint venture product between Ford and the Volkswagen Group, the first Ford Galaxy was produced at the AutoEuropa plant, Portugal and was paired up with the VW Sharan and the Seat Alhambra. The Galaxy used many of the Volkswagen Group mechanicals, perhaps most notably the 2.8 litre VR6 petrol engine from the top versions of the Volkswagen Golf. It also used the VW Group''s 1.9 litre Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) turbodiesel unit. Although VW Group designs, all of these sourced engines were supplied with "Ford" badges on the rocker covers.

The interior was also a mix of Ford and VW Group influences, including a Golf-based instrument pack paired with the Ford curved fascia mounting which was reminiscent of that seen in the Mondeo. There were three trim levels initially, being the Aspen, Ghia and GLX. In 1999 Ford introduced the new LX and Zetec trim styles to replace the Aspen and GLX models.

Second generation Ford Galaxy (2000 - 2005)

In 2000 Ford sought to distance itself from its VW Group roots with a major redesign of the Ford Galaxy. This involved using more of the traditional Ford design work such as the corporate front end style with an all-new dash in the interior cabin. High quality materials and a design aesthetic that was likened to the third gen Ford Mondeo, released at a similar time to the Galaxy Mk2, helped to solidify the Galaxy as a true Ford.

The Mk2 featured many improvements when it came to the drive quality too, helping it to keep its place at the front of its class. Improved steering precision, handling and ride comfort made it very popular, as did the new engines available such as the 24v VR6. The Galaxy Mk2 was available in three trim levels, the LX, described as being accessible, the Zetec, described as being sporty, and the Ghia, designed for luxury.

Third generation Ford Galaxy (2006 - present)

Ford introduced the third generation Galaxy at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, before putting it on the market alongside the shorter and lower Ford S-Max. The new Ford Galaxy is said to have a top speed of 121 mph, although it is larger than its predecessor.

The new Galaxy is a four pillar vehicle of Ford design, with no VW Group parts remaining. It is no longer produced at the AutoEuropa plant in Portugal, instead being assembled at a newly re-equipped plant alongside the Mondeo in Genk, Belgium. Only Ford''s own engines are used, with diesels from the Duratorq family of engines, although there has been some negativity surrounding the use of the 1.6l Ecoboost engine due to its lack of power.

The Galaxy Mk3 uses elements of Ford''s Kinetic Design, like large wheel arches and angular headlights, as well as lots of new features like Home Safe Lighting, Quickclear heated windscreen and a cool passenger glove box. Another major selling point is the "FoldFlatSystem", allowing for the seats to fold flat to the floor to change the interior arrangement of the vehicle.

In 2012 the Ford Galaxy was reviewed by What Car? and given 4 out of 5 stars. They detailed that the Galaxy was more fun to drive than most MPVs, while Top Gear also reviewed the car and gave it 7/10, adding that it had a great all round look.
