What is an Hub Seal?

A hub seal for installation on the wheel end of a vehicle includes an annular casing, an electrometric sealing ring. This is supported within the annular casing and includes an axially extending sealing lip, an annular sleeve mounted coaxial with the annular casing. This is in place to prevent oil/grease from leaking out onto the brakes.

Hub Seal Adapter

A hub seal adapter has an outer diameter and thickness dimensioned fit into the internal bore of a standard automotive hub in the same position that the grease seal would normally occupy. It is to be retained in the hub by the same snap ring as would be used to retain the seal in the hub. The adapter includes an internal bore into which a grease seal is press fit. The grease seal has a slightly smaller outside diameter than the standard seal. An 'O' ring retains the grease seal in the internal bore of the adapter. The adapter can be manually removed from the hub for cleaning and greasing of the hub bearings without damaging the seal, thereby allowing reuse of the seal.

Removable and Replaceable Hub Seal

A removable and replaceable Hub Seal is a one-piece, reusable unit for vehicle axles. The unit includes a stiff but flexible casing. The casing has a radial flange, a slightly axially inclined sleeve, and a purely axial portion ending in a free edge. The electrometric covering is thin adjacent the free edge, it gradually increases in thickness throughout the slightly inclined axial extent. Finally it contains a radial section covering the flange and having two or more sealing ribs. A cover holds the seal unit in place when it seals snugly in the counter bore. When the cover is removed, the seal may be removed by hand from the counterbore. On replacing the hub seal, any leaks will be clear to see. This will probably mean that the grease has got on both sides of the disc and contaminated the brake pads, which will also have to be replaced.
