What is an Automatic Gearbox

An Automatic Gearbox is designed to change gears without the driver having to do so manually. Although they cut down on gear changes, they are less fuel efficient and more expensive to run than vehicles the allow manual gear change.

Automatic gearbox modes.

The standard Automatics will use a push button or pull handle gear stick Park mode or P will lock the gearbox when parking but still allows for wheel spin, the handbrake still needs to be applied to prevent this. Reverse or R mode is only accessible when the vehicle is stationary, once it is engaged it allows the car to drive backwards similar to a manual car. There maybe a safety mechanism to prevent accidentally engaging car in reverse before a complete stop, as this will cause damage Neutral mode or N will allow the car to disengage and roll under its own weight. The Drive or D mode is used when driving and will automatically change gear as the car accelerates. Depending on the make and models automatic gears range from 3-4 with some newer types having anywhere between 5-8.
There are various types of Automatic Gearboxes depending on the make of car. The Honda and Acura have D4 and D3 modes using either 4 gear for motorway driving or 3 drive gears for use in more urban environments. Porsche Tiptronic gives an option for manual selection of gears as well in M mode. OverDrive D, OD are other types of Automatic gears that allow Computer Controlled Gearboxes to engage the Automatic Overdrive. These types of gearboxes Drive D locks the Automatic Overdrive off.
