Hyundai Atoz Common Problems and Solutions

Losing Power

Problem:

The engine is slowly losing power, and the check engine light keeps turning on and off intermittently.

Models affected:

Solution:

Your first step should be to check your spark plugs and change them if they are dead. Have a check over your ignition wires and make sure that everything is connected and not burnt out. If there are damaged wires, order replacements from our parts page. If there is no wire damage, then the most likely cause is the cambelt sprocket on the crankshaft. This is a known weak spot for the Atos, but it's a DIY repair that most people are more than capable of.

Engine Won't Turn

Problem:

The gears are getting harder to shift, the engine stops at random times, and all of your dashboard lights have illuminated.

Models affected:

Solution:

Have a look at your transmission interlock. Likely, your shifter interlock switch isn't engaging, which means that the starter motor can't be activated. We always have interlock switches in stock and will deliver your replacement promptly.

Wobbly Gears

Problem:

The gear stick is wobbling when you drive and is getting worse.

Models affected:

Solution:

This will be a crankshaft issue, and you're going to need to tackle it before it causes damage to your belt pulleys, engine, and cambelt. Browse our parts list for a replacement crankshaft, and fit it yourself by following one of the many online guides available.

Engine misfiring

Problem:

The ignition coils are known to fail on the Atoz. If you are having problems with the engine misfiring and/or the engine management warning light has appeared on the dashboard, this would be the most likely cause.

Models affected:

Solution:

You will need to replace the ignition coils to fix this problem. It is recommended that you change them all at once for optimum performance. Have a look at the video below for an idea how to change a coil:

Cylinder head gasket failure

Problem:

If you are noticing that the car is overheating, it could be caused by a blown cylinder head gasket. Ways of checking if it is the cylinder head gasket that has blown are: a white creamy substance when you open the oil filler cap and/or a mixture of oil and water in the water reservoir. If the car is overheating and you catch it early enough, it could just mean replacing the water pump. This issue is mentioned above.

Models affected:

Solution:

Replacing the cylinder head gasket can be a big job, but this is what needs done to sort this issue.

Hard Clutch

Problem:

The clutch pedal is getting stiffer and stiffer, and changing gear is becoming difficult.

Models affected:

Solution:

Check out where the clutch enters the firewall on the driver's side. It's extremely likely that your clutch pedal will have either collapsed or dented to the point where it no longer works properly. This is quite common on post-2006 models of the Atos, and it's going to mean ordering a new clutch pedal from our parts list.
