Car parts job threat

Fears are growing for the future of 175 Wearside jobs amid concerns a car parts plant is set to shut and work sent to Europe. GMB organiser Val Scott was due to attend a meeting with management and staff at TRW Systems plant on Washington's Stephenson Industrial Estate early today. She is expecting bad news for the company's 175 employees. "I had a call inviting me to go in on Monday morning," she said. "I think the top and bottom of it is that we are looking at total closure." Rumours about the future of the plant, which makes parts for Toyota and Alfa Romeo, have been circulating for some time.
