car parts maker guaranteeing production til 2016

Car unions strike deal guaranteeing Ellesmere Port Vauxhall production until at least 2016 CAR production will continue at Ellesmere Port’s Vauxhall plant until at least 2016 – and unions have also clinched a deal for no compulsory redundancies with prospective owner Magna. Unite the Union announced the agreement after weeks of talks with the Canadian car parts maker which is paying 4.5 million euros for a 55% stake in the European arm of US car giant General Motors. There were fears that the two UK Vauxhall plants at Ellesmere Port and Luton, employing a total of 5,500 staff, could suffer in cutbacks by Magna after Germany – home to the majority of GM’s European network – promised 4.5 billion euros in subsidies. But the deal announced yesterday pledged that Ellesmere Port will build the new Astra until 2016; two shifts will build 147,500 cars by 2011 compared with previous targets of 125,000; and there will be no compulsory redundancies at the plant, which employs 2,200 staff. In return car workers have agreed to a two-year pay freeze.
