Nissan car parts jobs secured at Sunderland

A CAR parts manufacturer says it is now back in the black after securing new work with Nissan and believes its remaining workforce is now safe after cutting more than 100 staff over the last 15 months. Calsonic Kansei Sunderland Ltd recorded losses of £3.8m for the 15-month period ending March 31, 2009, which was down from the £7.9m loss it announced in its previous financial year. However, wide-ranging cuts have seen its workforce shrink from 416 to 307 over the period as the company looked to reduce its fixed costs and expenditure. However, the firm, which has two manufacturing sites in the North East and provides exhausts and plastic components to the automotive industry, said it was now hitting a profit and that it expects to achieve a full recovery by the start of 2011. The firm, which is owned by Japanese parent company Calsonic Kansei Corporation, has made a number of key decisions that have enabled it to stem the flow of cuts, including reducing its shifts from three to one, and now hopes to begin hiring staff to help support its renewed growth.
