Nissan Juke goes into production

A NEW vehicle has gone into production at Nissan’s North-east plant. Company executives and Government ministers gathered at the Sunderland site yesterday to see some of the very first Juke models being assembled by workers. The new model goes on sale next month and the company has already taken advance orders for more than 22,500 from across Europe. Trevor Mann, Nissan senior vice president of manufacturing in Europe, was joined by John Hayes, the minister for further education, skills and lifelong learning, who reiterated the Government’s commitment to British manufacturing during the visit. Mr Mann announced Nissan would recruit 75 new apprentices during the next five years. And Mr Hayes said the Government was to invest £150m nationally in manufacturing apprenticeships. Nissan is helping provide a boost to Teesside’s supply chain - which will be bolstered further when production for Nissan’s LEAF electric car begins in 2013. Stockton plastic car parts manufacturer Nifco UK, which counts Nissan among its major clients, has announced a second multi-million pound factory to take advantage of an upturn in the car market. The £8m move will create 40 jobs and convert 50 contract staff to permanent employment.
