Official lighting colour codes
The three different lighting colours cars and vans are fitted with signal very clear messages to other drivers. In order to prevent people fitting their vehicles with lighting colours to match their own preferences, regulations regarding this were debated and an official codes were adopted internationally. In the UK, this set of regulations is known as the "The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989" and according to this - the exterior lighting colours operating on any conventional vehicle on the road are divided and positioned as follows:
White Lights - these will only be positioned at the front of the vehicle to help the driver distinguish the road and road signalling - Exception: reversing light at the rear of a vehicle
Amber Lights - positioned on the sides of the vehicle to serve the purpose of signalling lights; all turning lights are amber as well - Exception: direction indicators at the rear of a vehicle
Red Lights - these lights are only permitted at the rear of the car and they signal reduced speed or the stop of the vehicle - Exception: fog lights at the front of a vehicle
There are some exceptions to the conventional use of the three different lightning colours as described above, but the exceptions are only acceptable on special vehicles such as: police cars, ambulances or servicing / towing vehicles - all of these need special lighting to signal emergencies.
