What are Relays?
A relay is a switch which controls the electricity from one part to another. The main purpose of a relay is to control a circuit with a low powered signal or for many different signals that need to be controlled from one point by just the one signal. The relay operates as a switch by opening when an electrical circuit is flowing and closing when the circuit is not needed. As a relay can control a higher powered signal on output than was received on input, it amplifies the signal. There are many different types of relays depending on the function and where it would be used. The basic make up of a relay is a wire coil wrapped around an iron core, with usually two points of contact. The relay works when an electric current is passed through the coil it acts as a magnetic field, which triggers the contacts and in turn triggers the switch.
