Rover 25 Common Problems and Solutions

Rear Wiper Washer

Problem:

There is water in the washer reservoir, and you can hear the motor working, but no water is spraying onto the rear window.

Models affected:

Solution:

Find a stiff wire and slowly insert it into the rear jet, which is likely blocked. If this doesn’t work, then you’re going to need to order a completely new wiper motor from our parts list.

Broken Roof Aerial

Problem:

Your roof aerial has seized or completely broken.

Models affected:

Solution:

Although a new roof aerial is extremely cheap to buy from our parts page, this can be a bigger installation job than you might think. You’ll need to drop the whole roof lining so that you can access the securing nut. If you install this incorrectly and leave a loose-fitting mast base, then you will start to suffer from water leaks and interior damp.

Only Hot Air From Heater

Problem:

You can’t get cold air to come from the heater. The pipe that feeds the heater is hot, but the copper pipe feels cold.

Models affected:

Solution:

This is a fairly common fault on the Rover 25 and is being caused by a faulty heater control valve. You can ignore the problem if it doesn’t bother you that much, as it won't cause any knock-on effects or affect vehicle performance. If you do want to repair it, order a new valve from BreakerYard and easily install it yourself.

Car Pulling To One Side

Problem:

Every time that you change gear, you can feel a juddering sensation.

Models affected:

Solution:

First, check your engine and gearbox mountings. If there are obvious signs of wear and subsequent movement, then order new mountings from our online store. If the mountings look fine, then it’s your clutch assembly that will need to be replaced. You can find a new clutch assembly on our drop-down menu, but this is a big job to install yourself.

Overheating Engine (Petrol)

Problem:

The engine is overheating quickly, even on short drives. The radiator and coolant reservoir is bubbling. There may be thick white smoke coming from the exhaust.

Models affected:

Solution:

The coolant hasn’t been topped up regularly enough, and that has led to problems with your head gasket. If you catch the problem quickly enough, then topping up your coolant may resolve the issue. If not, then you'll need to order a new head gasket from our parts page.

Key fob not working

Problem:

The key fob not working is a very common failure on this car. If you press the key fob and nothing is happening (it is not unlocking the doors, disabling the immobiliser, and not letting you start the car), this is due to the fob losing the code. One of the most common causes of this is pressing the fob away from the car, which results in the fob not having the exact code to communicate with the ECU.

Models affected:

Solution:

Before re-programming the key fob, you are best to check and see if it is just a flat battery in the fob. If this is not the issue, you need to have the key fob reprogrammed. Take it to a professional to have this done.

Water pump problems

Problem:

The water pump is prone to leaking on this car. If you are loosing coolant, then this is the first place to check. If this issue is not seen to quickly enough, it will eventually cause the cylinder head gasket to fail. We recommend that you have a look at the above video for more information:

Models affected:

Solution:

Fitting a replacement water pump will resolve the issue. We can help you find a replacement water pump at a very low price.
