What is a Ball Joint?
This is a circular Joint at the end of a tapered extension, the Ball is encased securely inside a socket known as a steering knuckle. This allows the Ball Joint to move in a rotational motion while remaining in place. They are extremely important for safety in suspension and steering of a vehicle. This type of linkage system is used in various motion controlled devices. Sealed Joints do not allow debris to contaminate and do not need lubricating. Standard Ball Joints are not sealed and will need additional lubrication from time to time, it is recommended this is done once a year. Although they need maintenance standard Joints last longer than sealed ones. Wear and tear will over time cause sealed Joints to crack, dry out as a result and rust. A worn out Joint will make a snapping or clicking noise when the wheel is turned and squeak when the vehicle is stopping or accelerating. When mounting a bump in the road there may be a thud sound from the front suspension.
