History of Vauxhall Vivaro

You may notice some familiarities when it comes to the look of the Vauxhall Vivaro, which is due to it also being marketed as the Renault Trafic and the Nissan Primastar. The Vivaro is the result of a joint venture between German Opel, Japanese Nissan and French Renault, which resulted in this light commercial vehicle being released in 2001. The Vivaro won two honours at the 2014 What Van? Awards, including Best Medium Van and the Innovation Award for Vauxhall''s blind-spot mirrors. The Vauxhall Vivaro has been a firm favourite in the medium-sized van world since its introduction in 2001 and has earned an excellent reputation among reviewers. Auto Express gave the Vivaro a 4.5 out of 5 rating, praising its build quality and carrying capacity - particularly for the newest generation.

First Generation Vauxhall Vivaro (2001 - 2014)

The original Vauxhall Vivaro was manufactured at the GM Manufacturing Plant in Luton, alongside the Nissan Primastar and Renault Trafic vans with which it was created. Some Vivaro vans, particularly the high roof versions, were made in Barcelona due to the low roof at the Luton assembly plant.

The Vivaro is available in panel van, minibus, combined bus/van and platform crew-cab configurations. There are two different wheelbase styles and two roof height options available, with three diesel engine power options and a petrol engine. In 2006 the vehicle was given a facelift which saw the front indicators moved from the front bumper up into the headlight housing. After the facelift only a 2.0 L four-cylinder diesel engine was available in two states of tune; a 90 PS or 115 PS paired with a six-speed manual or optional automatic transmission.

Auto Express says that the original Vivaro stood up well to the tests of time over its lengthy lifecycle, with close to 950,000 vans rolling off the line at the Luton plant.

Second Generation Vauxhall Vivaro (2014 - Present)

2014 saw the release of a new generation van which was again sold by Opel in Europe. The Opel/Vauxhall vehicles for the UK and mainland Europe continued to be made at the Luton plant, except for the high-roof variants which are now manufactured at a factory in Sandouville, France.

The Vivaro has earned a decent reputation for reliability over its 12 years of service, and performance is generally good - even on the option of the smaller 1.6l engine. In 2015 the Vivaro earned a three star Euro NCAP safety rating. The Vivaro was awarded Best Medium Van at the What Van? Awards in 2014, with What Van? Editor Paul Barker saying: "Class-leading refinement and excellent new engines add to the innovative ideas to offer an efficient and cost-effective all-rounder."
