What is an Alloy Wheel?
Alloy Wheels are used for automotive vehicles they are made from aluminium or magnesium metals (or a mixture of both). Most are lighter than the equivalent steel wheels but some types are heavier, the lighter variety improves steering and speed. They are extremely efficient heat conductors and improve heat dissipation reducing the chance of brake failure in adverse driving conditions. Alloys are expensive and considered to be visually attractive. They are becoming more available but are usually only standard on higher-priced models. Alloys are at risk of galvanic corrosion and need to be protected against it.
Aftermarket wheels
A wide selection of Alloy Wheels (often incorrectly called "mags," a term for magnesium wheels) are available offering increased performance, size, desirability and as a status symbol. They are now part of pop culture (as with "dubs").
Magnesium Alloy Wheels
Magnesium Alloy Wheels are sometimes used on racing cars for better performance. This is done through a process of forging. Cast magnesium disks are used in motorcycle wheels. The mass of a typical magnesium automotive wheel is about 8–12 kg (depending on model).
Magnesium wheels are flammable and difficult to extinguish and have been banned in some motor sports in the UK.Some variants of Magnesium Alloy Wheels may have low corrosion resistance.
The disadvantage is they are expensive and not practical for most street vehicles.
