Alfa Romeo Giulietta Common Problems and Solutions
Engine Turns Itself Off
Problem:
The engine is turning off unexpectedly, particularly while stopped at traffic lights or junctions.
Solution:
You'd assume that this is going to be a very big and expensive problem, but it's most likely to be a simple engine valve fault. These do wear out, but it's very easy to order a new one from our parts page and install it.

Knocking Noise
Problem:
You can hear a knocking noise while driving, and the road feels bumpier.
Solution:
The front suspension on the Giulietta is a notorious weak point, and that knocking sound is a sign that yours has become too worn. You'll have to order a replacement front suspension system from BreakerYard and replace the damaged one.

Ticking Noise From Engine
Problem:
You can hear a ticking sound coming from the engine, and it occasionally misfires. The check engine light may also be on.
Solution:
You have a timing belt failure, which will need to be replaced. We always have timing belts for the Giulietta in stock, and can have your replacement delivered. Install the new timing belt, and that telltale ticking will be gone.
Difficulty level
Loss of Drive Power
Problem:
The car loses power while driving, and you may notice glitchy gear changes.
Solution:
This is being caused by the wiring loom that's connected to the transmission oil pump, which is chafing up against one of the support brackets. The wiring will usually be damaged, so you'll need to order some replacement wiring from our store and replace any damaged ones. If the wires aren't damaged, then reposition them so that they are apart from the support bracket.

Worn gear knob
Problem:
The gear knob on the Giulietta is known for breaking/wearing. It’s made from plastic as standard and the clips inside are known to shear off, causing the top of the gear knob to come off in your hand while you are changing gear.
Solution:
You will need to replace the gear knob to sort the issue.

Water leaks into boot
Problem:
If you are suffering from water leaking into the boot it is usually caused by a faulty rear wiper seal. This can cause water to build up inside the rear hatch, the carpets in the boot to get wet and the spare wheel well to have a build up of water.
Solution:
You will need to replace the rear wiper seal in order to stop the leak. You might also need to empty any water from the spare wheel well, so as to avoid corrosion, and dry out the carpets to stop dampness setting in.

DNA system failing
Problem:
Has the DNA (Dynamic, Normal and All-weather) system failed on your Giulietta? This system is prone to failure, particularly on models built before 2011, and the part responsible for causing the issue is the MultiAir actuator. If this part fails there can be an error message on the display, such as 'Dynamic mode unavailable'. You may have also noticed that there is a lack of power, or hesitancy.
Solution:
You will need to fit a replacement MultiAir actuator in order to fix the problem.

3rd brake light failure
Problem:
There is a known problem with the wiring on the third brake light on this car. If you find that the third brake light is not working, then faulty wiring is the most likely cause. The most common reason for this failure is for water to be leaking in through the wiper seal.
Solution:
In most situations you will need to replace the whole third brake light unit, but it is always worth checking to see if you can fix the wiring to resolve the issue. If you need a replacement unit, we can help you find one at a very low price.
Difficulty level
Low Horsepower
Problem:
The car has low horsepower and requires more fuel than usual.
Solution:
It's very likely that your intercooler sleeve has become detached, thanks to a faulty retaining band. Order a replacement from our parts list, reattach the intercooler sleeve, and hold it in place with the new metal band.
