The History of Audi A6

The Audi A6 is an executive car that has been in production since 1994. There have been four generations so far, offering buyers a choice of front wheel drive and Torsen based front wheel drive, which is also known as the Audi quattro system. The A6 is a prestigious vehicle, showcasing the stunning design and classy interior Audi is well known for. It has won a number of awards, like Best Executive Car at Auto Express'' New Car Awards in 2014. It was also crowned Best Premium Executive Car at Parkers'' New Car Awards in 2012.

The Audi A6 is known for its great interior, attractive exterior and all round driving performance. However, Warranty Direct ranked the Audi A6 15th out of 16 executive cars. So despite its charming good looks and overall luxury feel, the A6 does have its faults and is far from the most reliable vehicle in its class.

First generation Audi A6 (1994 to 1997)

The very first generation Audi A6 was launched in 1994. The Mk1 A6 was essentially a facelifted and re-badged version of the Audi 100, which had been released in three successive generations prior to 1994. The exterior was only changed ever so slightly from the "C4" generation Audi 100, featuring new front and rear lights and radiator grille. The UK was in fact the first market to receive the A6.

Audi released a range of new engines for the A6, including a number of 1.8 litre 20v inline four cylinder and 2.8 litre V6 petrol engines. As for the diesel engines, Audi introduced an inline four 1.9 Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) and an inline five 2.5 TDI.

Second generation Audi A6 (1997 to 2004)

The Mk2 Audi A6 was introduced in 1997, based on the same design platform as the previous model (the Volkswagen Group C5 Platform). The A6 was first showcased at the 1997 Geneva Motor Show, featuring a slight improvement in terms of quality. It was marketed in the same categories as the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

The redesigned body presented buyers with a modern design, with fastback styling which would set the trend for the new lineup of Audi cars. Engine sizes ranged between 1.8 litres and 4.2 litres, with very powerful V8 40v and turbocharged V8 40v systems.

Third generation Audi A6 (2004 to 2011)

The third generation Audi A6 was released in 2004, after being designed by Satoshi Wada in 2001. Featuring the new Audi single frame grille, the Mk3 A6 was a hit from the off. It offered engines ranging in size from 2.0 litres to the powerful 4.2 litre V8.

Fourth generation Audi A6 (2011 to present)

The most recent generation of Audi A6 was launched in 2011 and is still in production now. It''s clearly heavily influenced by the Audi A8, pulling elements from its exterior design. It shares its interior, platform and powertrain with the Audi A7 four door sedan.

Engine choice for the fourth generation A6 includes two petrol engines: a 2.8 litre FSI V6 with 204 horsepower, and a 300 horsepower, 3.0 litre supercharged FSI engine. There are three diesel engines available, including a 2.0 litre inline four cylinder and two 3.0 litres.
