History of the Audi Coupe
The Audi Coupe is a two door sports car that was in production between the years of 1980 and 1988. Built in Germany, the Coupe was based on the Volkswagen Group B2. The Coupe was the first of its type built by Audi since the 100S model from the early 1970s.
Honest John describes the Audi Coupe as a "solid and efficient coupe that''s surprisingly roomy". However, they criticise it for not feeling sporty, "even in five cylinder quattro form". It''s known to be a generally reliable vehicle that offers good interior space and value for money.
Audi Coupe (1980 - 1988)
The Audi Coupe was first displayed at the 1980 Paris Salon. It featured a similar body shape to the Audi Quattro, which also shared the Volkswagen Group B2 platform. The biggest mechanical difference between the two was the use of the naturally aspirated 1.9 litre carburettor petrol engine, as well as 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 litre fuel injected inline five cylinder engines in the Coupe. Some Coupes were fitted with a 1.8 litre inline four cylinder engine.
It was given a facelift in 1984. Updates included a new slightly sloped radiator grille, new headlights and the bumper was a large wrap around number with integrated spotlights and turn signals. These changes brought the drag coefficient down to 0.36. They also introduced a new dashboard and a new interior. In this same year, Nissan also made the option of the Quattro permanent four wheel drive system available. This model was much rarer than the turbocharged Quattro model. Mechanically this Coupe Quattro model depended on components from the GT and Audi 80 quattro. Its four-wheel drive drivetrain was almost identical to that used on the Ur-Quattro. However the the Coupe Quattro used the GT''s front struts, smaller 245mm diameter front brake discs and lower ratios in the gearbox.
It was given another facelift in 1986, giving buyers a wider range of catalysed engine options. The entire Coupe range recieved stainless steel exhausts.
