About Steering Columns

One of the most important components in the steering system of any motor vehicle is the Audisteering column. The primary function of a car’s Audisteering column is to connect the steering wheel to the steering mechanism. This enables the steering system to translate the rotating movement of the steering wheel, as the driver steers the car, to the transverse movement of the vehicle’s wheels.

Although the operation of the steering system is the principle role of the Audisteering column it also has secondary functions, which include housing the Audisteering column electrical wiring, which is responsible for the operation of many of the vehicle’s accessories. The Audisteering column also hosts a variety of column switches, including those that are used to operate the windscreen wipers, the headlights, the horn, the direction indicators, the screen washers and, in higher range vehicles, the audio system, cruise control system and onboard computer.

Most modern vehicles also have a steering lock, which is housed within the Audisteering column and many vehicle models also have the facility to raise and lower the steering wheel, via a mechanism within the Audisteering column, to suit the height of individual drivers. Finally, certain steering columns, especially on older vehicles, also hold the gear shift control lever.

The   Audisteering column is therefore a component with a variety of important functions.

Audi trivia

  • Not happy with just making one of the first automated cars, Audi even built and raced one in the Pikes Peak Hill race, setting records for speed even without a driver.
  • Audi was the first manufacturer to use four-wheel drive cars in the World Rally Championship. Consistent wins meant that the WRC soon allowed all cars to use the technology.
  • The classic Audi ‘four-ring’ logo is instantly recognisable and is meant to symbolise the four companies that make up the main trading arms of Audi.
  • The Audi R8 is made very unusually, and only 20 are rolled out of their factory on any given day. That’s because it's considered an honour to work on this model, and only the top 120 Audi employees are qualified enough.
  • The oldest car race event in the world, the 24hr Le Mans, has been won by Audi an impressive 13 times, most of which were in the classic R8 racer.
