History of BMW 5 Series

The BMW 5 Series is a mid size luxury car that has been in production since 1972. So far there have been six generations of the 5 Series, sold in saloon and GT body styles. It is one of BMW''s most popular models. In fact, the 5 Series is BMW''s second best selling car, just behind the 3 Series. In 2010, the 5 Series accounted for approximately 50% of BMW''s profits. The BMW 5 Series is known to offer a great selection of engines. According to Auto Express, the 5 Series provides excellent cabin quality. What Car? describes the BMW 5 Series as the right balance between comfort, refinement and dynamic excellence.

First generation BMW 5 Series - E12 (1972 - 1981)

The BMW 5 Series E12 was launched in 1972, designed as a replacement for the BMW New Class. The E12 was smaller than BMW''s large E3 saloon, but larger than the two door 2002 models. Its body was styled by Paul Bracq and Pietro Frua, based on the Bertone 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti Geneva show car. This generation of the 5 Series was only made available as a saloon body with four or five speed manual transmission. Buyers had the choice of a four- or six-cylinder petrol engine. Production of the Mk1 ceased in 1981.

Second generation BMW 5 Series - E28 (1981 - 1988)

The Mk2 BMW 5 Series featured revised headlights, thicker rubber bumper surrounds and large rectangular taillights. BMW launched the E28 in 1981, giving buyers the choice of four- and six-cylinder engines. At the time, the E28 was the fastest production saloon in the world.

Third Generation BMW 5 Series - E34 (1988 - 1996)

The third generation BMW 5 Series was launched in 1988. It was regarded as one of the most reliable luxury cars on the market, earning the best in class rating from Intellichoice in 1991. In fact, it is still considered one of the most reliable BMWs ever made. Featuring airbags, four-wheel anti lock brakes and a rigid body structure to protect occupants, the E45 is very reliable. It also came equipped with automatic stability control or traction control.

Fourth generation BMW 5 Series - E39 (1997 - 2003)

The Mk4 BMW 5 Series was launched in 1997. In terms of body construction and electronic technology, the design for the E39 was drawn heavily from the E38 7 Series model. It was available with a choice of four-, five- and six-speed automatic and manual transmissions, with a range of powerful engines in both petrol and diesel forms, including a large V8 petrol.

Fifth generation BMW 5 Series - E60/E61 (2003 - 2010)

The fifth generation 5 Series featured non-traditional styling, with many of its features receiving mixed reviews. However, despite the criticism the E60/E61 became the best selling 5 Series model. The E60 marked a significant step forward in technology for the 5 Series. It became the first of the series to use a turbocharged petrol engine. It featured a longer and wider chassis, fitted with a new set of active safety and high tech components.

Sixth generation BMW 5 Series - F10/F11/F07 (2010 - present)

The BMW 5 Series F10/F11/F07 was launched in 2010. The platform is based on the F01 7 Series, featuring a front dual ball short-long arm suspension and a rear multilink suspension. A huge selection of powerful engines are available, ranging between 2.0 litres and 4.4 litres.
