About Bonnet Gas Strutss

The bonnet is a crucial part of the car body, for beneath it is housed some of the most important components a car needs in order to run. In most cars the bonnet is the hinged cover that protects and allows access to the engine compartment. A bonnet is made up of an outer panel which is designed to be smooth and streamlined, assisting with the aerodynamics of the vehicle, contoured to match the shape of the car, and an inner panel which is strong and offers protection to the engine beneath.

The bonnet is fixed to the frame at the front of the car and, usually works with a latch mechanism and, with the action of hinges, opens outwards. The BMW bonnet gas strut is a rod which forms part of the framework of the bonnet and is used to hold the bonnet up and in place when it is open. The BMW gas struts are positioned on either side of the bonnet so that the bonnet is held in place evenly.

The BMW bonnet gas struts use a gas spring mechanism to work, which uses gas inside a cylinder, compressed by a piston, to apply force, which keeps the strut rigid and extended and able to support the weight of the bonnet while it is open.

Loss of gas is the usual cause of failure in the BMW bonnet gas strut. Damage can occur to the seal, enabling gas to leak out every time the bonnet is open, i.e. every time the bonnet gas strut opens and shuts. A faulty or broken BMW bonnet gas strut may mean that the bonnet is hard to open, won't stay open fully or just slams shut again. When replacing the bonnet gas struts on your vehicle, buying new BMW bonnet gas struts will ensure a perfect fit with the BMW bonnet and compatibility with the make and model of your car.

BMW trivia

  • The Cold War affected BMW sales so significantly that the company was nearly bought out by their arch-rivals Mercedes in 1959. A silent investor saved the company, but the rivalry between BMW and Mercedes Benz is ongoing.
  • Pop Art legend Andy Warhol was asked to hand paint a BMW, and he did the whole thing on a full-sized model in 24 minutes. He said afterwards, "I adore the car, it's much better than a work of art."
  • It might not be the accessory that everyone needs, but for BMW drivers in South Africa who were worried about carjackers, the 'Blaster' was a flamethrower that shot huge flames from either side of the car. Not currently available in the UK…
  • The famous German pilot, the Red Baron, called BMW engines the 'greatest in the world' and ‘the best engine in the war’.
  • The main headquarters for BMW in Munich is designed and shaped to look like car parts. There was a whole new 'four-cylinder' building added on in 1973, and there's definitely the look of an engine about the architecture.
