About Transfer Boxs

The BMW transfer box, as the name suggests, transfers power to the front prop shaft. This prop shaft is attached to the rear prop shaft with a differential connecting the two. The power that’s generated in the front prop shaft is transferred through the differential to the rear prop shaft.

The BMW transfer box is part of the drivetrain on 4 x 4 and multi-axle vehicles and allows the driver to change between 4 x 4 and 2 x 2 wheel drive. It receives power from the transmission and uses either gears, hydraulics or in the case of some multi-axle vehicles, chain drive.

The BMW transfer box is designed for both on-road and off-road driving. The BMW transfer box can leak oil, which can be noticed either on the BMW transfer box or from the handbrake drum, depending on the position of the leaking seal. This leaking of oil will cause a loss of power steering. Other signs of a failing transfer box include a whining noise when you accelerate and a tapping noise as you decelerate. These issues can be accompanied with, or separate to a loss of braking ability and a loss of gears.

BMW trivia

  • Electric cars might be all the rage now, but BMW built their first one in 1972 and called it the BMW 1602e. It didn't quite make it to market though, thanks to the fact that it could only hold a twenty-minute charge.
  • The famous German pilot, the Red Baron, called BMW engines the 'greatest in the world' and ‘the best engine in the war’.
  • Think you know what BMW is an acronym of? If you answered Broke My Wallet, you’re definitely wrong. It really stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke (which is Bavarian Motor Works in English).
  • Did you know that BMW built a Lamborghini? The two popular companies decided to make a race car together, but Lamborghini pulled out during the manufacturing process. BMW carried on, and the final result was the original BMW M1 supercar.
  • Pop Art legend Andy Warhol was asked to hand paint a BMW, and he did the whole thing on a full-sized model in 24 minutes. He said afterwards, "I adore the car, it's much better than a work of art."
