About Vacuum Pumps
The BMW vacuum pump is a small electric motor-driven pump which works with the car's ECU (Electronic Control Unit) to provide the extra vacuum required for the car's cruise control system to operate.
The vacuum pump is usually located in the left front corner of the engine compartment and is connected to a vacuum line running from the pump to the inside of the car.
When the accelerator pedal is pressed, the BMW vacuum pump is activated. The vacuum pump works by creating a vacuum in the actuator, which operates the throttle valve. The throttle valve regulates the flow of air and fuel into the engine and ultimately the speed the car travels at. So the cruise control on the car takes charge of this process and, with the vacuum produced by the vacuum pump, manages the flow of air into the engine and in turn the speed of the car. Once the car has reached the desired pre-set speed, the cruise control system will maintain this constant speed and the BMW vacuum pump shuts off.
The BMW vacuum pump has several components that can fail over time, including the electric motor. If this part malfunctions it is imperative that you replace it with a BMW vacuum pump that will be compatible with the make and model of your car.
BMW trivia
- The Cold War affected BMW sales so significantly that the company was nearly bought out by their arch-rivals Mercedes in 1959. A silent investor saved the company, but the rivalry between BMW and Mercedes Benz is ongoing.
- Pop Art legend Andy Warhol was asked to hand paint a BMW, and he did the whole thing on a full-sized model in 24 minutes. He said afterwards, "I adore the car, it's much better than a work of art."
- The very first BMW was named the 'Dixi'. They hadn't designed it (it was really an English Austin), and they dropped the name 'Dixi' very quickly, instead opting for the rather more grandiose BMW 3/15 DA-2. Rolls off the tongue!
- One of the reasons older BMWs keep their value is because it's easy to get spare parts for even the oldest models. That's because BMW has carried on making car parts, even for cars that were built in WWII.
- The BMW M1 has a classic look, so it's no surprise that its designer also came up with some other amazing car designs. Giorgetto Giugiaro is also responsible for the DeLorean, the Beretta U22 Neos handgun, and the Nikon D4 camera! Although, he also designed the Yugo, commonly called the worst car that's ever been made.
