History of BMW X1

BMW first launched the X1 in 2009. It was designed to be a luxury compact crossover that sits below the larger X3 and X5 models. The German manufacturer used the same platform as the previous generation 3 Series Touring to create the X1, with hopes that it would rival the MINI Countryman, Mercedes GLA and Audi Q3. The X1 was a huge commercial success for BMW, with approximately 500,000 models sold around the world between the launch in 2009 and 2013. The BMW X1 is a vehicle that takes the ''compact'' in compact SUV very seriously. Autocar says that BMW released the X1 as a test of how small an SUV can be whilst still being considered a premium vehicle, although this isn''t necessarily a bad thing. Low weight means it''s fuel efficient with low CO2 emissions, and the car-like handling has a refined feel.

BMW X1 (2009 - 2015)

BMW launched the X1 in 2009, as the third addition to its X range of vehicles. It was designed to sit below the larger X3 and X5 models, representing a more practical, rugged version of the 1 Series. However, it was in fact built on the same platform as the 3 Series Touring. When the second gen X3 was released in 2010 the X1 was left as the entry-level model to the German carmaker''s SUV lineup, testing the limits of the size boundaries of this seriously compact SUV.

The X1 was in development for three years, with the crossover market growing massively since then - meaning greater competition for the BMW. The X1 was the first BMW SUV to offer RWD as an option, with four-wheel drive also available. A range of trim levels including SE, Sport, xLine and M Sport are available, paired with a range of different features and engine options. Four 2.0 L diesel engines are usable, with one 2.0 L petrol engine. EfficientDynamics systems help to make the X1 as efficient as possible, as does the low overall weight of the car - as the smallest and lightest SUV in the BMW line up. What Car? praises all of the engines as being strong, flexible and well suited to most driver''s needs. From 2013 Servotronic setup was added to help remedy the heavy steering.

Standard equipment levels are relatively high across all trim levels, with all models getting alloy wheels, Bluetooth, DAB radio and automatic air conditioning. Practical features such as fog lights, parking sensors and tyre pressure monitoring are also included.

The styling used on the X1 makes it instantly recognisable as a BMW, albeit a particularly small one. The front of the car is boosted by LED daytime running lights and sleek headlights, while the clear layout and use of high quality materials mean that the interior of the X1 feels very high-end. Sporty versions also gave a range of desirable styling cues including red-trimmed sports seats, updated alloy wheel styles and red detailing on the leather gearshift.

Aside from its sporty styling cues and SUV basis the X1 is much better on-road and off-road, truly living up to its ''crossover'' description. Many also commented on the low, car-like driving position of the X1, which is unlike other larger, higher SUV vehicles.

Euro NCAP awarded the BMW X1 five out of five stars for safety during its testing procedures, giving it an 87% rating for adult protection.
